The Great Enabler: Securing a Global Treaty to End Plastic Pollution

In early 2022, 175 countries adopted the landmark United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) resolution 5/14 entitled “End plastic pollution: Towards a legally binding instrument.”

The text calls for the convening of an Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee with the objective to negotiate an internationally legally binding instrument to end plastic pollution—including in the marine
environment, based on a comprehensive approach that addresses the full life cycle of plastic.

With Plastic Solutions Fund support, the Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL) and Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) seek to turn this commitment to negotiate into the actual, legally binding instrument that the world needs.

Their goal being a global plastics treaty that has the potential to transform the overall plastics economy by tackling the global human rights, climate, and environmental impacts of plastic and delivering absolute reductions in plastic production, use, and leakage into the environment.
